The Short Version

  • First, it was "sitting is the new smoking," so people began standing at their desks all day.
  • No one lives a perfectly balanced lifestyle! The goal is to be mindful of your activity and try your best to move differently throughout the day.

The human body is incredibly complex, with so many moving parts that work perfectly together. It also has an amazing ability to adapt and compensate when things start to go wrong. The body is always working towards balance, even when we treat it poorly by sitting all day, standing all day, or overexercising. Our modern lifestyle makes it really difficult to stay in balance, but neuromuscular therapy can help - especially if you want to live a long, healthy life.

How Do We Find Balance?

First, it was "sitting is the new smoking," so people began standing at their desks all day. Then, standing was replaced by treadmill desks. We have even seen cycling desks! It seems like the advice is constantly changing around what the best way is to take care of your body. The truth is that there is no one best way. Sitting all day can be just as hard on your body as deciding to walk on a treadmill all day. Your body simply needs balance. Moderation. What we see in many of our patients is that in order to compensate for a long day at a desk, some turn to heavy exercise 5+ times a week. This kind of 0 to 60 mentality creates a lot of stress in the body. As a result, we start to see muscle pain, joint pain, and limited mobility.

How Can NMT Help?

No one lives a perfectly balanced lifestyle! The goal is to be mindful of your activity and try your best to move differently throughout the day. Make sure your workstation has ergonomic seating. Alternate occasionally with some time standing. Go for a walk at lunch and do some gentle stretching. And, consider making neuromuscular therapy an integral part of your weekly routine. We can address any tightness or imbalance before it gets worse. It can't be said enough - regular tune-ups are so much more effective than sporadic 90-minute massages. Our patients can't believe the difference they feel by coming in weekly for a short session. Overall they notice their body feels better on a daily basis, moves well, and hurts less.
